Measuring opening size for
Vinyl Replacement Windows.
To determine Opening Size for ordering vinyl replacement windows
(you may have to remove trim to measure accurately):
1. Measure the width of the opening at three places: the top, middle, and
bottom. Use the smallest of the three measurements as your width dimension.
a. If the old frame is still in place, measure
from its inner most surface.
b. If the frame
has been removed, measure the rough opening of the wall structure.
2. Measure the height of the opening at three places: the left
side, middle, and right side. Use the smallest of the three measurements
as your height dimension.
a. If the old frame is still in place, measure
from the inner most Width surface at the head to the sill.
b. If the frame has been removed, measure
the rough opening of the wall structure.
When ordering, give the width first, followed by the height. Provide
all measurements in inches. (Replacement windows are manufactured in 1/4"
increments.)
Assessing the condition of the opening.
To determine whether the opening is ready for a replacement window, check
it for square and plumb.
a. Measure the diagonals of the opening from
each corner to its opposite. The two measurements will be within 1/4"
of each other if the opening is suitably square.
b. Test whether or not the opening is plumb
-- that the vertical members are straight up and down and do not lean
in or out, or to the left or right.
Look for signs of air leakage or water damage (i.e. dry rot, cracked
sills, dry wall damage, etc.) These problems can't be corrected simply
by replacing the window. Make repairs before installing the replacement
window.
Notes and Cautions.
NOTE: Depending on the type of opening,
you should make provisions for the 3-1/4" jamb depth of the vinyl
replacement window. If the window being replaced is wood, measure the
pocket depth up to the blind stop. With other types of windows, the placement
of the new window can vary and may result in slightly less interior/exterior
sill space.
